Anthropological analyses rest heavily upon the concept of culture. Sir Edward Tylor’s formulation of the concept of culture was one of the great intellectual achievements of 19th century science.(64)Tylor defined culture as “…that complex whole which includes belief, art, morals, law, custom, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society.”This insight, so profound in its simplicity, opened up an entirely new way of perceiving and understanding humanlife. Implicit within Tylor’s definition is the concept that culture is learned, shared, and patterned behavior.
翻译重点：
（1）define culture as… : 将文化定义为…
这个结构比较好理解，但是一定要注意一种叫做“状语前置”的特殊情况。
状语前置举例：
正常语序：I（主） will discuss（谓）the problem（宾）with you.（状）
这里的 with you 是状语，修饰前面的discuss。
状语前置：I（主）will discuss（谓）with you（状）the problem（宾）.
这里把状语（with you）提到了宾语的前面，构成了“状语前置”的结构。
所以，假如你遇到 define as B A 的结构，要能反应过来宾语前置句怎么判断，这就是 define A as B：将A定义为B。

（2）that complex whole 一个复杂的整体
注意：这里的 that 不是引导从句创业项目，不要一看到that 就以为引导从句！that 最常见的用法还是用作指代，翻译成“那个”“这个”。
说到这里，讲一个在我看来比较荒唐的事情。
美国加州非常讲究政治正确，每个人都非常注意自己的言语，尽量不去伤害到别人。原本这是一件好事，但是正如老话说的，过犹不及，加州的政治正确（或者说美国整体而言）都太过了。
比如，下面视频中，南加州大学的一名教授在教演讲技巧的过程中，举了一个中文的 filler word（说话间隙的停顿词）的例子，就是我们常说的“那个”。
结果，因为听起来比较像英文中的 “N“word，（即 “Nigga”这个词），被很多同学举报，这位教授也因此停职并对此道歉。
在我看来，这实在是有点过度政治正确了。
语言最重要不是字面的含义，而是说这个话的人，到底想要表达什么。朋友间相互损来损去，毫不客气，可能反而是爱；嘴里满是夸奖，全是客套好话，可能笑里藏刀。
（3）which includes belief, art, morals, law, custom, and any other capabilities and habitsacquired by man as a member of society.
这里，which 引导一个定语从句，修饰前面的 that complex whole, 翻译的时候可以使用后置译法，将这句话独立成句。
另外，我们还需要将这句话中的名词准确翻译：
belief：信仰
art：艺术
law：法律
custom：习俗
any other capabilities and habits：其他任何能力和习惯
（4）翻译难点：acquired by man as a member of society，请问这个后置定语，修饰前面哪个名词？
我认真思考了一下，这里的句子确实有歧义。
一般来说宾语前置句怎么判断，我们判断定语从句到底修饰哪个名词，是从句子意思判断的。
但是这里确实有疑问。我们既可以认为它是修饰capabilities and habits, 也可以认为它是修饰belief, art, morals, law, custom, and any other capabilities and habits 等名词的合集。
不过，无论如何，最后的意思没有太大差别，我们以任何一种方式翻译均正确。
因此，这句话的翻译是：
Tylor defined culture as “…that complex wholewhich includes belief, art, morals, law, custom, and any other capabilities and habitsacquired by man as a member of society.”
泰勒将文化定义为“一个复杂的整体，它包括信仰，艺术，道德，法律，习俗，以及人作为社会成员所能获得的其他任何能力与习惯”。
当然，如果将 acquired by… 看作是修饰前面名词的合集，我们也可以翻译为：
泰勒将文化定义为“一个复杂的整体，它包括人作为社会成员所能获得的信仰，艺术，道德，法律，习俗以及其他任何能力与习惯”。
